Orris Rhizomes being dried

Orris (Iris)

FLOWERS | Soft, Powdery and Floral

The central part of the Iris' root system is known as a rhizome.

This rhizome resembles a bulb and is completely odourless. However when dried, pulverized into powder and steam distillated it transforms into a material known as 'Orris Butter', one of perfumery's most highly prized materials.

The oil taken from Orris Butter has a luxurious, buttery floral scent that is akin to violet with fruity undertones and a characteristic powdery quality. When produced correctly, it is worth more than its weight in gold.
