WHY PERFUME ISN'T JUST A BEAUTY PRODUCT

I recently did a fragrance consultation for someone who gave me a completely new perspective on the importance of perfumery to our world.

I've always had a gripe with fragrances and perfumes being referred to as only 'beauty' products. Sure, some people purchase these products to elevate their attractiveness to other people and often, to themselves too. However thinking only of perfumery as being only related to attraction, undermines everything else that scent can bring to the table.

Artistry and self expression. A way to exploring other cultures or to experience things from the other side of the world. As a tool to help you to feel more connected to nature. It can boost your confidence or help you to reminisce on a specific time, place or person. If you are open to it, it can be about so much more that just being beautiful.

So when we conduct these consultations I will always ask what the fragrance is for - why are they looking for one? To many people it’s simply a practical question; is it for the evening time, for going to work, for a special occasion etc.

This lady however, added a whole new dimension to my understanding of the importance of scent.

She said that her and her partner had just separated. It was amicable, they still very much loved each other but it come time for them to go separate ways. 

She said that when significant changes happened in her life, when her normality took a turn she changes her signature fragrance.

And why? Because it helped her not just make peace with closing that chapter of her life, but to feel excited and ready for the next one.
